Which I hope and pray does not offend anyone that I’m comparing them.
They’re both the type of characters who have great personalities to work with, and great storylines to work with.
Which is why I came to like them both.
The problem is how they were handled. Alfons, despite how great a story they could’ve made of him (loved Ed and was a Roma sympathizer in Nazi Germany—huge, radical storyline here), was introduced as Ed’s substitution for his brother, Al. That…pisses me off.
And Winry? In both series, she at least gets a little more story than “Don’t forget me even as you leave me for the guy I’ve apparently been subbing for” (Please don’t kill me Heiderich mun. I’m talking about the writers handled this..not about the character himself). But Winry was still introduced in the manga as a connection to Ed—romantic or no. And in both series, she just always had to take a back seat to whatever else was going on. I get that she’s a civilian, but…maybe I wanted more Winry perspective.
Once again, I’m comparing the writing of their characters. There are always those characters with much potential that don’t quite pan out when they are basically abused by the writers. Heiderich more so than Winry, though.
[[ No, no, and I’m not mad at you for saying that because it definitely is how the writers portrayed him. :/ ]]
